N-E underground outfits call for boycott of Republic Day

The Hindustan Times (New Delhi)
January 12, 2001

Syed Sajjad Ali
(Agartala, January 11)

THE NATIONAL Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura
Tiger Force (ATTF) have decided to boycott the Republic Day
celebrations. The two organisations will sign a joint declaration with
12 other underground organisations operating in the Northeast.

These organisations have also enforced a 12-hour general strike on
January 26 to enforce their boycott call. The main initiator of the
joint call is the ULFA.

According to them, the Republic Day and the Independence Day were events
that symbolised ?India's colonial occupation?.

The ?solidarity statement? released on Tuesday said, ?Organisations that
have been fighting to achieve freedom for their people have decided to
boycott the Republic Day and call a dawn-to-dusk general strike in the
whole region to enforce the boycott effectively.? Extremist
organisations give such calls every year on the eve of Republic Day or
Indepe-ndence Day. This year, underground organisations of all the seven
states of the region have joined the boycott call.

The most significant event is NLFT's inclusion in the ULFA-led alliance.
It was for the first time that the NLFT had signed a statement with its
rival ATTF. NLFT had been a ?friendly organisation? of the NSCN(I-M).
Both the organisations used to issue boycott calls during Republic Day
and Independence Day. A police official said that differences could have
cropped up between the NLFT and the NSCN(I-M).
