Dissidents protest over ?Armed Forces Day? of Junta

Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), March 27, 2001

A group of Burmese pro-democracy activists staged a surprise protest at
a dinner reception of Burma?s ?Armed Forces Day? organized by the
Burmese embassy here this evening. About 25 Burmese activists and their
supporters entered into the Nikko Hotel in the city, where the Burmese
embassy held the reception and protested against the military rule in
Burma.

Before the Malaysia police and Burmese embassy officials came to their
notice, the activists wearing T-Shirts with the prints of ASEAN-Shame
and the picture of Burma?s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi walked
around in the reception hall for some minutes. Some activists were seen
holding the placards ?Down with dictatorship? and their mouth covered
with write-ups such as ?Forced Labor? and ?Open School?.

The Malaysian police and Burmese military intelligence personnel had
arrested one Burmese activist Ko Peter Thang Mar, according to a
spokesperson of Burma Democracy Movement Committee, which organized the
protest.

While the ruling Burmese junta marks the day as Armed Forces Day, the
opposition democracy groups in exile say that March 27 is remembered as
the Anti-Fascist Resistance Day.
