The United States has started its aid to India to combat drug smuggling
across the Indo-Burmese border and Mizoram is the first Indian state,
which has directly received American support for anti-drug activities.

Equipment and hardware worth US dollar 70,000 to be used in anti-drug
activities were handed over by the US officials to the Mizoram exercise
officials in Calcutta on Thursday at a function. The US officials
including Ms Michelle Esperdy, the US state department?s coordinator of
regional crime and narcotics affairs and US Embassy regional crime and
narcotics affairs officer Ms Sabra Thornton, were present at the
function while Mizoram excise commissioner Mr. Lalbiakmawia Khiangte
received the equipment.

The US hardware assistance includes six Maruti Gypsies, six Yamaha
motorcycles, four digital cameras, four computers with modems and
printers and VHF wireless sets. This is a part of agreement that India
and the United States signed last September in which America has agreed
to provide $ 200,000 package assistance to India for anti-drug drive.

The United States is concerned with the increasing activities of drug
smuggling across the India-Burma border. According to Mizoram excise
superintendent Mr. C. Lalngaihthanga, the state seized only 3.5 kg of
heroin last year. However, it did not mean that large scale-heroin
smuggling from Burma to India across Mizoram were not taking place. The
excise officials in Mizoram said it is due to the lack of modern
equipment and financial support for their department.

Mizoram, which has international border of about 400 km with Burma, has
become a transit for drug smuggling from Burma to major destinations
being Europe and America.
