India will have 70 millions more jobless over the next decade

With the growing unemployment rate annually in the country, India is
estimated to have 70 millions more jobless over the next decade,
according to a release of a left-wing political party in India.

India had 40 millions job-seekers registered with employment exchange in
the whole country at the end of 1999 and it was little more than 10% of
the country's total workforce, said the Communist Party of India
(Marxist-Leninist).

The CPI (ML), in its weekly-update this week, said that while the
country's total workforce is growing at the rate of 2.5% annually and
the economy has been reportedly growing at the rate of 6.4% annually,
the average annual growth of employment in the organized sector was a
mere 0.8% throughout 1990s. "Assuming that the employment grew at the
same rate in the unorganized sector, India added jobs at the rate of 30
lakh a year in the 1990s".

"In the coming decade, however, 1 crore (10 millions) people will enter
job market every year. If the economic growth and job ratio remains the
same, the country will add 7 crore (70 million) jobless over the next
decade", it added.

Besides unemployment, there is said to be under-employment in rural
areas of 76% of the workforce. The guess estimate puts the number of
under-employed also at 40 million.
