                         Manipur students' body threatens separatist
campaign

Prabin Kalita
Guwahati, July 5
(Hindustan Times)

The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has threatened to launch a
separatist campaign if the Center does not withdraw its territorial
extension of the ceasefire agreement with NSCN (IM) by July 31.

AMSU representative Sougaijm Rakesh, talking on behalf of
the AMSU leaders who are in jail in Manipur, said:" If the Center does
not withdraw the ceasefire extension by July 31, we will launch a
separatist campaign".

"We shall demand the premerger status of Manipur. This has
been decided by the AMSU central executive body".
Manipur, which was a princely state, gained independence
from the British in 1947. It later merged with India in 1953.

"If the Indian government continues with its policy of
giving away parts of Manipur to other states, there is no point in
staying with India".

He said that AMSU was of the opinion that the territorial
ceasefire extension was nothing but an endorsement by the Center of
the NSCN (IM)'s demand of a greater Naglalim to be formed out of the
existing Nagaland state and parts of Arumachal Pradesh, Manipur and
Assam.

Though two other students' organizations- the Arumachal
Pradesh Students ' Union (APSU) and All Assam Students' Union (AASU) ?
have agreed to launch a joint agitation along with AMSU against the
ceasefire extension, only the AMSU has threatened a separatist movement.

"We are working on launching a joint movement with APSU and
AMSU but that does not include the separatist movement. The separatist
movement is entirely an AMSU issue", AASU president Prabin Boro said.

Rakesh alleged that when the Burmese were waging war
with India, Manipur was used as a buffer zone by the Indian government
till Jawaharalal Nehru gave away a large part of Manipur to the Burmese.
