Guwahati, Nov. 11: Disappointed with the spurt in activities of the
Muslim fundamentalists backed by the Inter Services of Intelligence
(ISI) of Pakistan, the Union Defence Minister Geogre Fernandes has asked
the Army and Air force to remain vigilant in order to foil any
subversive attempt of the ISI in the North East India. The Defence
Minister who was on a hectic tour in the strategic points of the region
in the aftermath of the ongoing war in Afghanistan said that ISI is
making effort time to time to destabilize the region by instigating the
militants. To foil the evil design of the intelligence group our Jawans
should alert, Fernandes said.

In this context, he revealed that the Government of India has drawn up a
scheme of Rs. 1600 crore to build new barracks in the country. Meanwhile
the security in the international border has been tightened following
stepped up activities of the militants with active support from foreign
countries. The region bordering- Bangladesh, Nepal, Burma and Bhutan has
been tense for the last couple of weeks, as militants have started
regrouping. Worried over the ongoing situation in the region the special
secretary to the Union Home ministry, Dr P D Shenoy held a high-level
meeting with the Director General of Police (DGPs) of the seven north
eastern states in Assam yesterday and reviewed the security scenario of
the region. During the marathon meeting with the DGPs, he laid emphasis
on gearing up the security in view of spurt in activities of the
militants. On the other hand, the unified command operation, which was
imposed in Assam, has been reactivated to contain militancy. To scale
down the ongoing militancy, some core groups have been constituted with
representatives of the intelligence groups.

This assumes significant that for the firs time, the Government of India
has taken stern initiative to eliminate militancy from the region. The
militancy problem of the region has reached such to a magnitude that
since 1991, altogether 7759 people have lost their lives while during
the period nearly 2000 security personnel were killed by the militants,
the official sources said.
