Description: "...Here?s a fascinating mapsite that I have been using a lot lately. Over 45,000 place names with their locations in Burma available through it. You have to be a bit nimble with varieties of spelling for the English transliteration of Burmese names and get used to working with their map system, but once mastered, the system does produce remarkable results. I?ve been using it to pinpoint the vast network of irrigation facilities throughout the country. First step I follow is to look up the place name in the World Waypoints section and get the co-ordinates Then I use a Nellles map to figure which of repeated place names is closest to the approximatel location. After that I follow through using the Map section on Wayhoo. I would say my score is well above the 80% level by now. Definitely worth a link in the Map section of OBL..."

Description: "...The corridor concept has provided a holistic approach to the spatial development of the poorer areas of the GMS by focusing on investments in priority sectors (e.g., transport, energy, telecommunications, trade and investment, tourism, agriculture and agro-industry, finance, and human resource development) to maximize the development impact and minimize cost. It has thereby allowed for a “focused, limited and ‘bounded’ way of expanding cooperation beyond infrastructure projects.."

Description: "To strengthen inter-agency coordination, TBBC and the Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU) have mapped organisational reach in South East Burma/Myanmar for the education, health care and livelihoods support sectors. Information collected by MIMU from agencies registered with the Government of the Union of Myanmar has been combined with information collected by TBBC from border-based agencies recognised by non-state armed groups. The result is a comprehensive mapping of organisational reach with input from 32 agencies funded through Rangoon/Yangon and 27 agencies funded along the border. However, due to protection and visibility concerns, the data does not include all relevant agencies. The maps highlight how aid agencies based along the border complement the efforts of agencies based in Rangoon/Yangon in responding to humanitarian needs. Given the scale of vulnerabilities and limited funding, the agencies active in each sector have been disaggregated to the township-level to facilitate information sharing and to promote a more coordinated response. While the border based responses are predominately managed by community-based organisations, the maps reflect how initiatives from Rangoon/Yangon are generally led by United Nations? agencies and international non-governmental organisations. As the peace process evolves and opportunities to expand humanitarian access into conflict-affected areas increase, the challenge will be to ensure that international agencies build on the local capacities of these community-managed approaches."...6 MAPS -- 2 FOR EDUCATION (BASIC AND COMPARATIVE), 2 FOR HEALTH CARE (BASIC AND COMPARATIVE) AND 2 FOR LIVELIHOOD SUPPORT (BASIC AND COMPARATIVE). THE MAPS ARE ABOUT 1.8MB EACH.

Description: Ptolemy, 2nd cent. Douay?, 1605?...From the 4 map collection, INDIA ORIENTALIS, CHINAE REGNUM, IAPANIA REGNUM, INSULAE PHILIPPINAE... "Although the...maps are listed as attributed to Ptolemy, in reality, he died centuries before they were created. Ptolemy did not travel to what became Burma, instead he compiled second-hand information gathered from travellers. He also thought that the Indian Ocean was closed and there was a "Great Promonotory," a land bridge between Africa and Asia.* None of these maps depict the Indian Ocean as closed. Vasco da Gama and his crew had already travelled from Europe to India around Africa in 1498."

Description: A 1995 feasibility study, limited to Bangladesh, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, had identified a basic network of routes, recommended certain technical and operational standards for this network and provided a limited appraisal of the status of the existing routes in relation with these standards. In the light of the development of trade and economic exchanges between the countries belonging to subregional groupings in South and South-east Asia (Economic Cooperation Organisation, Bangladesh-India-Myanmar-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Cooperation), it was decided that the time had come to expand the scope of the study to include China, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Turkey and to (i) re-evaluate, and if necessary re-define, the network previously identified, (ii) assess the improvements required in institutional and commercial procedures to attract international traffic to the corridor, (iii) define an Action Plan for the development of the corridor to facilitate inter- and intra-regional trade and economic growth. The findings and recommendations of the study were considered by the representatives of all the countries concerned during a Policy-level Expert Group Meeting held in Dhaka (Bangladesh) in May 1999 during which the countries agreed on the establishment of Working Groups to study the gradual operationalisation of the corridors. Following the Meeting, the study was published as Trans-Asian Railway in the Southern Corridor of Asia-Europe Routes (ST/ESCAP/1980, New York, 1999).

Description: Summary" "Since late 2006, the Science and Human Rights Program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science has compiled a set of high-resolution satellite images to document the ongoing conflict in Karen State and other regions of Burma. This study in Burma follows similar activities undertaken by AAAS on Zimbabwe, Darfur, and elsewhere as part of its Geospatial Technologies and Human Rights project. Primary funding for this project comes from the Open Society Institute, with significant resources provided by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation as well. Monitoring human rights violations in eastern Burma with satellite imagery utilizes on-theground information reported via websites and email from organizations active in the region. These organizations include the Free Burma Rangers, the Karen Human Rights Group, and the Thailand Burma Border Consortium. Their reporting was reviewed by AAAS staff and compared with a set of geospatial data and traditional maps on eastern Burma to precisely locate villages and areas that may have been attacked. These locations were then compared with existing archives of commercial, high-resolution satellite imagery, and in many cases new satellite imagery was ordered as well. Using these sets of satellite imagery, AAAS staff determined if visible evidence of reported attacks was found. At present, AAAS has obtained and analyzed high-resolution commercial satellite imagery covering a few small areas of eastern Burma. Specifically, about 2,000 square kilometers of the Papun, Toungoo, and Dooplaya Districts of Karen State, and a small area of Shan State, have been assessed. In addition, growth of a refugee camp in Thailand was also documented. Twentyfive sites from the imagery that correlate with reporting from the region are presented below, including possible evidence of destroyed villages and houses, possible evidence of forced relocation, and expanded military camps in the area. These findings are detailed in the following pages and are also available for viewing on Google Earth (see Appendix A). AAAS efforts to acquire and analyze imagery and other data concerning the conflict in Burma are continuing as further input on the process is sought. AAAS welcomes comments and questions on its work to date, on any possible future image acquisitions, and input on attack locations in general. Please send such information, and any other comments, to Lars Bromley ([email protected]; 202.326.6495).

Description: Myanmar Standardized Place Names and P-codes: In Myanmar there has long been confusion with multiple versions of transliterated place names in use by various agencies. The Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU) has taken on the task of overseeing a comprehensive translation of place names into a common system that is promoted by IASC members and other organizations. In addition to standard place names, standard place codes have also been developed....The methodology applied for place name standardization was as follows: The names and p-codes of States/Divisions, Districts and Townships were provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Settlement and Land Records Department (SLRD). In 2005 those names were presented to and agreed by UNCT and INGOs as the standard English translation for Myanmar.... The names for village tracts and villages were provided in Myanmar language by the Ministry of Home Affairs, General Administration Department (GAD). Names were translated/transliterated to English by a team supervised by the MIMU. The names were also cross-referenced with the SLRD names and the names in use by various UN Agencies and NGOs. Kachin, Chin and Shan names (i.e. non-Burmese names) were reviewed by local experts in the field. The final translation was completed in 2007....What are P-codes? P-code is an abbreviated term for 'Place Code'. P-codes are similar to postal codes and are part of a data management system that provides unique reference codes to thousands of locations in Myanmar. These codes provide a systematic means of linking and exchanging data and analyzing relationships between them. Any information that is linked to one location with a P-code can be linked and analyzed with any other. In Myanmar, the p-code for rural places is structured as follows:...

Description: "Nice full color example of the first separate map of Asia. Munster based his maps on Ptolemy's Geographia, with significant updates and changes. Much of the information for this map of Asia came from the Travels of Marco Polo, written while Polo was in prison in 1298. This work told of Polo's travels with his father and uncle to China in 1275, and it had a immense impact on the conception of Asia held by Europeans through the sixteenth century. The map contains many inaccuracies reflecting the lack of good, first-hand explorations of Asia. The Indian sub-continent is shown too small, whereas in contrast Southeast Asia is beginning to be depicted somewhat correctly. Ceylon, once shown as a very large island, is now more its proper size, though two islands are shown in the immediate area. The old misconception concerning Ceylon is still reflected on this map, however, for the ancient name for the island, "Taprobane," is applied to Sumatra, an island more in scale with Ptolemy's idea of Taprobane. Munster extends the continent off the eastern edge of the map, so as not to commit on whether Asia was or was not connected with North America, despite his own map of America showing it as a separate land mass. Marco Polo's information was not all an improvement on Ptolemy. He introduced several geographic misconceptions, including one that put a 7,448 island archipelago off the coast of China, a misconception shown here by Munster with a scattering of islands and a legend giving their number. Besides its historic interest, this map has much visual appeal as well, with mole hill mountains, crenelated walls and towers to show cities, and Neptune and a huge sea monster in the ocean..."
