Description:
Abstract: "Ramayana
or
Yama
in
the
Myanmar
language,
is
one
of
Myanmar?s
canonical
literary
works
that
has
been
prevalent
since
ancient
times
and
appeared
in
the
forms
of
poetry
and
dramatic
performance.
Recently,
the
story
has
been
modified
and
reinterpreted
into
a
contemporary
novel
entitled
Lin-
gar
Di
Pa
Chit
Thu
by
Chit
Oo
Nyo.
Through
a
postcolonial
perspective,
the
novel
critiques
the
British-
Myanmar
colonial
power
relations
by
characterizing
Ravana
as
the
protagonist
who
represents
Myanmar
natives?
struggles
against
colonialism
while
appointing
the
role
of
the
colonial
powers
to
the
Rama
character.
This
anti-
colonialist
rewriting
of
Ramayana
is
achieved
by
turning
upside
down
the
traditional
writing
approach
of
the
story,
through
which
Ravana
is
the
antagonist
whereas
Rama
and
his
followers
are
the
protagonists.".....Paper delivered at the International Conference on Burma/Myanmar Studies: Burma/Myanmar in Transition: Connectivity, Changes and Challenges: University Academic Service Centre (UNISERV), Chiang Mai University, Thailand, 24-26 July 2015.
