Nat River borders between Rakhine State of Burma and Cox?s Bazar of
Bangladesh. It takes about 10 minutes to reach either side by motorboat.
The citizens of two countries have been crossing the border either for
visiting relatives both sides or for small-scale trading. However, since
September this year, the Bangladesh Defence Rifles (BDR) has Increased
its presence along the border villages and Nat River to prevent from
illegal crossing of the border.

The Bangladesh forces are keeping eyes on the border for the whole 24
hours a day and allow only those who have official passes to cross the
border. The citizens who live near the border, however, have to use
whatever means and ways available to cross the border without legal
documents. Many times, they are arrested by the security forces both
sides and have to bribe them huge amount for the release.

On October 16, Na Sa Ka (Burmese border forces) arrested two Rakhine
nationals, residents of Maung Taw town, while they were trying to cross
the border from Chan Pyin village of Rakhine State to Chan Chaung
village of Bangladesh side. Na Sa Ka forces got thirty thousands Kyats
from the duo for their release.

On 14th October, six m embers of Na Sa Ka arrested four Rakhine
nationals who were crossing from Maung Taw to Myit Nar village of
Bangladesh side. The four arrested Rakhines had to bribe Na Sa Ka
members for allowing them to cross the border.

Similarly, in the first week of October, BDR soldiers arrested four
Rakhines near Chan Chaung village of Bangladesh and took total twenty
thousands Taka (Bangladesh currency) from them.
